Media Blog Work

Q1. In what ways does your media production use, develop or challenge form and conventions of real media conventions?

In films and other media production they use many different things to create the perfect atmosphere. In thrillers they are trying to set a terrifying and panicky atmosphere when the action picks up, they do this in many ways.

The first way is to use the power of music or the lack of music in some cases. Non dietetic sounds are very important in this genre as they are normally filmed a quite place so they need to add the noises in if they are needed.

The best example is from this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvCI-gNK_y4
This is just the sound of the amazing Jaws theme song. In this clip you can only hear the music and that on it own build tension as the music gets faster and faster to the point of the sharks attack. But the music can also be use to create fake build ups in tension as it is use some times when nothing is about to happen. Also in some clips there is no build up and the action comes from no were, these are used to make you jump, most of the time because of the music you know some thing is going to happen, but that is not always the case, in this next clip it shows how some films like to make us jump. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMwmqp3GLMc. As you can see in this clip the character is giving a speech about how they are going to survive, but the shark comes from nowhere to kill him with no warning. In this next clip you can see the finished product as you see the music with the visual clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW2NemceA84. I this clip the music is supported by the images as the shark attacks and kills.

In our film we tried to use music as best as we could. During the titles we use a sound track that was slow and very creepy, this then cut of as the film started, and At this point we added a heartbeat which controlled the pace of the film. Near the end of the chase scene we then hear the girl breathing really heavy as she falls and turns; this may show that she is scared and very tired from running. This fast part of action which is a premonition / flash back is very much like the Final Destination films as they show what could and still might happen but the only thing is that you don’t know if the character has seen it or not. Here is a clip to back this up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKQ3ve4bNXI. The next part of film has no music but it just has the normal sound of the normal waking up routine. The slow and creepy music only comes back when she leaves the house, the music also show that she was safe in her house but now he has left she is in lots of danger.

The second convention of a thriller is a fast paced action, fast paced action is used when a fight is happening or when some one is being killed, or when some on is being chased and they are about to be killed.

In many films they have a slow part which sets the scene. The pace of the film will be pretty slow until it added the complication to the film. Like in Vacancy were the man and women are in the room of the motel and they play one of the video tapes and they find out that they are in the same room, at this point the music is start to build tension and also the clips will get faster and faster. The pace of the cuts is normally controlled by the pace of the music.

In our film we have a slow paced part were it set the scene and we have a very fast part were the girl is found to be in danger. But these two things are the wrong way round to most films as we start by showing the ending to the film, this chase scene is a very fast paced part and it is interlinked to the pace of the heartbeat. The heart beat is meant to represent the girl’s heart beating. The pace of out film then slows right down for the waking up and the norm of the morning route will slow shot and long sweeps, in this part of the film we don’t use cuts, in stead we use fades as they seems better suited so we don’t give the wrong impression, but we fade one part to another with a big time laps like when the girl is getting up as the audience knows what is going on and that is the same for the part were she is getting her cereal because it fades from her poring a bowl to her getting her coat on as we though the audience would know what has just happened. The pace does not really change outside as she does not know she is being watched by the person from the bushes and from behind other objects.

The last thing I think is very important to thriller film is camera movement. Camera movement can be use to set the scene or to show that some on has just looked over, around or under an object. Or it is used to show what is happening around a character like they are doing a 360 or 180 spin to work what is happening.

In this scene from the film Hancock you will see many sweeps and flowing shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5we24bQl0c&feature=related. In this shot you can see many sweeps from behind Will Smith shoulder which shows what he is looking at, when he gets surrounded there are many spins to show how trapped he is but it never shows him in a high angle shot being looked down upon.

In our film we don’t use shot to show what the character is looking at but she is always in the middle of the screen. This mean you can see what is in front of her and behind her or you can see what is on her left and what is on her right. This mean you can always see what is around her accept from what is chasing her, this is done to create and build tension and suspense.

In our film we also use black and white; this is used in many films like start to Sin City and also James Bond. Black and white affect is used to represent the passed or a parallel world. In our film it is which is a premonition she does not see. In the James Bond film I think it is used to show the past. The affect also gives the clip a eerier and creepy feeling, Coupled with the fast pace bursts it really should get the audiences hearts racing.

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social group.

We tried to aim our film at an audience that we knew. This is why we aimed our film at the age range of 15-19 year olds. The minimum would be 15 because I think our certificate would be 15 years old so it would be illegal for younger people to view this film. I don’t think many people over the age of 19 would like the film as it is a bit predictable. Also they have probably seen a Hollywood film which is similar. Because of this we used a young actress as she would appeal to girls and boy for different reason. Also a young actress seems more venerable than a 17 year old boy as they seem like they might be able to take care of them self’s a bit more than a small girl.

We then work on the set for the film; we first shot the bedroom part. This part was easy as we went to her house. Her room was brilliantly messy and a messy bedroom is a very stereotypical view of teenager’s bedrooms. Also the bed room had poster of famous stars on the wall. This does not just make the character less movie star and more of a normal life girl. In the bedroom scene we also use a prop, we use a new flip mobile phone, this is the first thing she picks up which makes it seem the most important thing in her life and that is her friends and her social life. It also is another stereotypical view of teenager. This phone part could also be use for advertisement for a company and this may help pay for some extras for the film.

Q3. What kind of media institute might distribute your media product and why?

The best suited media company for our film would be Dimension films. I think they would be best suited for our film because they have distributed other films which are also horror/ thriller films. Dimension films have distributed films like the Scream series and other films like some of the later Scary movie films.

I think they would distribute our film because it is very similar to other films that they have distributed. It also falls straight into the thriller / horror genre that they seem to be best at distributing. Also our film is a bit of a head twist, this is like the Scream movies as you are guessing who the killer is.

Media products are advertise and talked about a lot, you find about them by watching a trailer on TV or the internet or by word of mouth, but I think you also find out about media products by following the sequence of games or film or TV programme. But I think trailer are the main way to get people to go wow I want to buy it and go see that film because it looks brilliant. Trailers and promos are always on TV and if you want to see the full version of trailer you just go on the internet and have a little search. But word of mouth is very important because promos and big shows talking about it may happen with a brilliant trailer but if the audience think it is rubbish people wont go and they will probably wait for a bit until it is the box that says DVD’s for 4.99 and then they will buy it. But for these types of films that are set at the teenage age group I would put most of the trailers and little shows about it on the internet as most people my age are on the pc / internet a lot of the time searching. This would be the best place to place the advertising. I would probably put it on a social site like Facebook or Bebo as many people go on it fore a few hours a week.

Thriller target audience

There are many different types of audiences and thrillers, and these all target specific people. Horrer thrillers such as The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village are targeted towards teenage girls and thrillers such as No Country For Old Men and Silence of the Lambs are targeted towards young males. The older classic thrillers like those from Alfred Hitchcock are targeted for Adults even though they are rated PG's.

Thrillers tend to be for people who like to work things out but sometimes it never happens until the end.

Our thriller appeals to those who enjoy the mystery. The twist at the start of film just before her possible death gets the audience to think because thev've seen part of the end of the film at the start. Our thriller is not made to strike horror into people but it's there to make people ask questions and to get thier hearts beating faster a few times. Our target audience 15-30 because we feel that anyone younger than 15 wouldn't be able to understand part of the ending being at the start. For anyone older than 30 we feel this film will not appeal to them because the film is about a young girl who attends college.

Hancock

Hancock is very funny twist on a normal super hero movie. The director Peter Berg was teamed up with Vincent Ngo and Vince Gillian as the writers for this great film that used great actor like Will Smith who plays the super hero or in some people eyes a villain. This film was realised on 2 July 2008. It when on to make the gross revenue of $624,386,746. This film was made in the US and then it was distributed by Columbian pictures.

I went to see this film in the summer of that year in the cinema with a friend and we both left thinking we have just seen one of the best films of the year because it had a mix between easy and hard humour for adults and for teens and also we though the plot was very new and very rare to find in a film and it had many twists This film is rated 6.6/10 and by watching the review are very positive and they most have a opening line which say “all better then I though it was going to be.” There were a few bad reviews; the big bad point was bad CGI and also no main villain. But the people do say that the film is more about will smith and he girl and there relationship than him saving the day. This review goes with the catch line which say don’t worry about the bad reviews this film is brilliant. I next quote I read had the title “Solid Popcorn Flicker”, he also then gave it a 9/10 rating. He said “Good special effects (even though there not all done)”, so it seems he like the special affect but he also says in this it could have been done a bit better as some of them did not seem right as they did not seems finished as this is silly thing to say to me as film company will not release a film if the special affect have not been done or completed to the right standard, that is why Avatar took so long. He also then said, “The relationship of Jason Bateman's character, Ray and his wife Mary isn't fully fleshed out and the chemistry isn't all there (towards the end Will Smith has better chemistry with her and there scenes together are juicy and easily the best parts of the last twenty five minutes)” By this he seems to be saying that the relationships between some of the character could have done with some more work but by the end of the film it seemed better and also this is the best part of the film as it takes the final twist, this twist creates a tense and drastic ending which should have stratify all audiences.

Technological Advancements

I think the main and most important thing in this film was the CGI, This film is unarguably the best CGI film ever made; this is probably because it took over 8 years to make with the best CGI equipment to date. CGI has been around since the early 1970’s but it near really hit the big screen until Star Trek II but it was only use in a small part of the film. The first real big hitter was the 1993 master piece Jurassic Park, this film use it though out the film to make the dinosaur with other beast come to life with the best life likeness they could get. This film single handily caused Holly wood to dump all old techniques and pick up digital techno to improve there films. There first real go was in the film Forest Gump where it was used in the historical parts of this film. CGI then single handily create a new type of film which is animation, animation had been done before using clay but CGI made it possible to make a film on a PC with no need for Clay or any other materials. Films like Beauty and The Beast where the best from the 90’s but Toy Story in the early 2000’s made the biggest impacted.

In this film they used CGI a lot to make the characters with power fly and also do other stuff, the CGI in this film was criticized a lot because it was apparently poorly done with big mistakes, they have to use the CGI in a big part of this film because it a superhero film and all super hero films use CGI.

Mise on Sense

Characters

The main character wears two outfits, one is his super hero suit which he where at the end, it is black which could show that he is a bit evil, it is also made out of leather so he is maybe a bit of a hard nut like a biker and also it is tight and this may show that he cares and looks after his figure, this is backed up by the fact that he is seen a bit working out and will smith is show like this in many film like iRobot.

His second out fit is a typical American out fit with a shirt and a pair of shorts, this shows that is casual person who don’t really care about his powers and this is shown in this clip.

http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi283836697/

His top is white, this shows that he is a nice person who is relaxed, his shorts are cream and that could show that he don’t care and he is very passive.

Mary Embery (the special girl) wear very normal cloths as well, blue jeans which could represent that she is very neutral, she is also wearing a green top, this shows that she is also a kind and sweet person who possible cares about the environment.

This film was set in LA; this film was naturally light though out the film by the American sun, this film was lightened really well as there was no real night seen so all they had to do was to make it like it was day time and in America that is easy. This film does not really use make up aspect from he normal make up that all actresses and also some actors use to make them look just right for the shot.

Case study

Avatar

This film is one of the best films of the decade. Directed and written by James Cameron who has done other film like Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines and he is now directing the new Terminator 5. Avatar was released on 17th of December 2009. When it first hit the screens it amazed the whole with the out of this world graphics but it did take 8 years. With massive gross revenue of 1.3 billion and as it is still at the cinemas they will be earning more and more money. More money will be on it way when the film goes on to DVD. This film was made in England and then it was distributed by 20th Century Fox.

This film that I saw late last year was one of the best films ever in my eyes and with the 8.7/10 and also every but very few people think this film is also one of the best this decade or of all time. The first review that I read had the catch line of Best movie experience of the last 30 years. The person says he was one of the lucky people to see the pre viewing. He said that 80% of the people who where in the room where totally blown away. The rest of the people where complaining about the characters or the popcorn. He then says to all of you people who can to expect a thriller like Alien. He says nobody wants to see people dieing anymore. People want to see great animation. I have now just seen a 1/10 review which says half way though, Why it sucks? The reason are very simple, he thinks it has copied the plot of an old film from the 70s. He then says the script could have been written by any one. He then goes on to say why the hell do we need actor because we have CGI to do that for use, all we need is some old random guy in a black suit with white stickers all over him. My last quote ha caught my eye because it has the title/ catch line which says “The best Block Buster in Years – The master is back”, this blatantly show that his review is going to be positive. He gives it a 9/10 star rating, he starts his review talking about the director and writer James Cameron, he says that this film has been a long time coming and it was a long 12 year since Cameron’s last master piece which was the brilliant Titanic. He then says that, “Avatar has turned out to be the biggest and best event movie of the year, perhaps the decade.” A massive appraisal but I can see why he is saying this after I have been to see it on the big screen, this possibly does concluded that Avatar should be named in the best 10 times of all time with other personal great like the other big hit this decade which was Batman and The Black Knight. There is one thing I did not like to the film and that was the slight bit of predictability of it, soon as I saw the part where he had to pick his Mountain Banshee and he was then told about the larger Toruk which only the leader or savers could ride which is the same old stuff in every fantasy film. Soon as I saw this I predicted to near perfection the next 30 mins of the film.

Technological Advancements

This film is unarguably the best CGI film ever made; this is probably because it took over 8 years to make with the best CGI equipment to date.

Avatar was started to be produced around this time and it ended an 8 year wait in 2009. They did not start from scratch, they actually use the Hallelujah Mountains as there bases for there set. They also use actor’s faces as bases for the characters. Some of things I have read say it took so long because they had to do every thing so perfect, the new land/ planet where they where shooting this was men to have different colour for nearly every thing, the big shot of where they are in the tree tops and you can see the floor took the most time best every part of the floor had to be changed to be beautiful but also not to distracting.

Mise on Scene

The outfits / skin of the characters in this film is very good in the senses of what they are meant to represent. Take sully, he is blue all over and that could repent that he is a calm and passive person, He also has black line all over him which could represent he is also a bad person in some ways and he is also very capable at fighting. This seems to go for all of the Avatars as they all seem to look basically the same. Next we have the Military Leader, he seems old so that could show that he is experienced, also he is in black which represents that he is evil and possibly he is going to be a bad guy combat outfit which represents that he is going to be up for a fight and he may even fight to the end. Next you have the non Avatared Grace who is a science person who is trying to build relationship between the human and the avatars by creating replicas which are controlled by special people. She is always seen wearing a normal white coat which all doctors / professors seems to where in films and also in normal life. The white may represent that she is anti violence; also this may represent that she is a very nice and calm person who is the correct person for the job in hand, the fact that she is wearing a doctor’s coat may also show that she is very professional and it could also show that she has some authority.

This film is meant to be set in space but as I have already said it, it is based on the Hallelujah Mountains, with some brilliant CGI they have got there set for a master piece of a film. I think in this film they used no prop accept from the ones they may have made on the computer. This film was perfectly light because it was all made digitally so they could edit the light every tiny shot to create there perfect shot and also to create the atmosphere they desire.

Conclusion

I think this film is a very good film which is flying towards picking up many awards, I think to not make a sequel to his film is stupid because this could become bigger than lord of the rings, the wait for the next film maybe 5+ years but I am sure that people who love the first one would not mind waiting for the second, I think this film should be the start of a trilogy because I think 3 film are right unless you have a book already out like Harry Potter or like Star Wars which is going on for there 6th or 7th film. Other film like the Lord of the Rings are a trilogy an they are the best film to be set in that manor of thinking, yes the Hobbit is coming out but that is set in a time before the Lord of the Rings and I think it is the start so some think new. The possible Avatar 2 will be brilliant because the graphics will be better, also by then cinema screens may be improved so the graphics could be improved even more. Also with new improvement sound could be improved like it is after every film to the next. I even have a idea for the title to the next film, Avatar 2 – The Humans Revenge, I know a bit cheesy but don’t we do love a cheesy film.

Transpoter 3

Transporter 3

Transporter 3 is a high energy full go, go, go film with car chases and epic fights. Transporter 3 was released on the 5 December 2008. The film was a great film and the best of the Trilogy. The director Oliver Megaton had done many other films but this was the first one for him to hit the big time. It was co written by Luc Besson who had wrote the last 2. Robert Mark Kamen was the other writer and he had also written the last Transporter but not the first one. This film was made in France and also in the United Kingdom. This film made $102,000,000 which is nearly $20million more than number 2.

Again im shocked by the rating. This film only scores a 5.9/10 when I would say it is one of my favourite films and I would rate it around 8-9/10. The reviews I have seen tell a different story though. 8/10 with a catch line that says, "Transporter 3" is a great example of good, "dumb-fun"... Not to be taken seriously, this sequel will leave you breathless with awesome action... A worthy follow-up. By this I think he is saying that yes there are mistakes but who cares it is funny and very clever and I love it. He goes on to say that the film is riding on the thin line of funny and the hilariously over the top at times as Jason Statham is back as Frank and if you like the last 2 you will love this one because of its ride of mayhem. Best of the all three of them is the catch line that rates this movie at a brilliant 10/10. The main reason he find this film so good is because he find the whole fact of the plot being so bullet proof and also the cheeky and comical relationship he has with the cop. A great film with a perfect mix of fast action and slow part. The least review I had sore was one that rated this film 1/10. I was very confused why any one would find it that boring and poor but here are the reasons. The main reason is that she has got is that the girl actress is useless and could not tie her shoe lasses together if she tried and also that the plot is the same old same old. Again I think people are missing the point of the film. It is going to be the same plot basically because all film series follow a similar trend like Saw and that is why lost people say that the first one or two is the best and very few say they have done the best job on the last film unless they blow you away.

Technological Advancements

I think the main advancement for this is actually was only seen when it came out on DVD. This was the first one of the trilogy that also came out on Blue Ray as well as DVD. This technological break though would have improved the in home cinema experience. Blue ray is limited to blue ray players and also the PS3 but it has done wonders, The graphics are improved and also the sound is also improved, Blu Ray which is very similar to HD but it meant to be better.

Mise on sense

This is a great film for representation, the main character that is called Frank Martin and he is played by Jason Statham, this character is normally in businesses type outfit. This outfit makes you think that he takes his job very serious which he does. Also he never wears his shirt tucked in and this could symbolise that he is never.
